Hamilton Rallies to Win Portuguese Grand Prix

After falling to P3 early in the race, Lewis Hamilton fought back to win Sunday’s Portuguese Grand Prix for his 97th career victory. Teammate Valtteri Bottas finished third, completing the podium, and secured the bonus point for recording the fastest lap.

Hamilton leads the Drivers’ Championship by eight points from Max Verstappen with Bottas in P4. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team is 18 points ahead of Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship.

“That was such a tough race, physically and mentally, just keeping everything together,” said Hamilton. “But that race was satisfying, when you’re in third and have to overtake two amazing drivers – amazing! Having races like that is what I live for. The gap between us all is so close, and every single point is going to count this year. I love the battle; I’ve loved it since my days in karting and as a team, we can’t leave any stone unturned – we’ve got to continue to push this car, squeeze everything out of it.”

The F1 season continues this weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix. Live coverage on ESPN starts at 9 a.m. ET Sunday, May 9.
