Sep 15, 2021 Bottas Secures P3 at 2021 Italian Grand Prix
Valtteri Bottas claimed an impressive podium at the Italian Grand Prix, fighting back from P20 with a number of smart overtakes to cross the line in P4 before being awarded P3 following a time penalty for Sergio Perez. The result helped the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team (362.5 points) maintain its lead over Red Bull (344.5 points) in the Constructors’ Championship.
Lewis Hamilton suffered his first DNF of the season after a collision with Max Verstappen on lap 26 of 53. Verstappen attempted a pass on the inside of turn two, making contact with Hamilton and sending both cars into the gravel. Both drivers were forced to retire, and Verstappen was awarded a three-grid place penalty for the next event by the Stewards shortly after the race as a result.
Verstappen (226.5 points) narrowly leads the Drivers’ Championship from Hamilton (221.5) and Bottas in P3 (141 points).
“Starting from the back is never easy, and in the end, I am glad we got more points than Red Bull today, especially considering where we were before the race,” said Bottas. “Now we need to look ahead, and I hope to carry this momentum into Russia, a track where I’ve done well in the past.”
The F1 season resumes at the Russian Grand Prix on September 26. Live coverage begins at 7 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
