Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Seeks to Improve Fortunes in Debut of Miami GP

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team will take to the streets of The Magic City this weekend for the debut of the Miami Grand Prix in Round 5 of the 2022 season. Practice for the inaugural Miami GP begins later today, May 6, with the race set to start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. All practice sessions, qualifying and the Grand Prix televised on the ESPN network and ABC.

Friday’s two practice sessions will mark the debut of the Miami International Autodrome course, a temporary track that winds through the Hard Rock Stadium Complex, home to the Miami Dolphins NFL team, and onto 203rd Street. The 5.4-kilometer course features 19 corners — 12 left and seven right — with several low- and high-speed turns, long straights and three DRS zones.

“Miami is an exciting new challenge and a complete step into the unknown,” said Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team Principal Toto Wolff. “The track looks demanding, with a real mix of low and high-speed corners, and it’s set to be a spectacular showcase for the sport to our growing U.S. fanbase. So, we’re set for a fantastic event, and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out.”

The Miami GP is set to expand F1’s growing popularity in the U.S. as the first of two races in the country this season ahead of Round 19 and the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas team will seek to rebound in the Miami GP following what Wolff called a “difficult week” for the team at Imola in Round 4 of the championship in which George Russell finished P4 ahead of Lewis Hamilton in P13.

Wolff said the team has been confronting the challenges of the 2022 season head on, and the Miami GP should serve as a benchmark for improvements.

“This team has shown its resilience over many years, and the difficult start to this season has lit a fire within every team member, determined to put it right,” Wolff said.
